John Howard
Artistic Advisor and Chief Adjudicator


John Howard was born in 1950 in Glasgow, and is active as a composer, music educator/ musicologist, and conductor. He read music at the University of Durham, and subsequently received his PhD there. He studied composition with David Lumsdaine.

John Hooper
Adjudicator


Dr. John Hooper is Professor of Music at Concordia University College of Alberta where he serves as Academic Head of the School of Music, teaching conducting, theory, and aural skills. He earned his D.M.A. in choral music from Arizona State University as well as degrees in theory and composition from A.S.U. and James Madison University in Virginia.

Kevin Mazimas Ko, Adjudicator

Kevin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Music Composition from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2001 and obtained his Masters of Arts (MA) in Music Composition in 2003. In the meantime while he was studying MA, he simultaneously completed an intensive Masters degree course at Concordia University Wisconsin, majoring Church Music, Handbells Conducting, Handbells Performing, Handbells Composing as well as Choral Conducting. He was a choral conducting student of Dr. James Nowach (University of Wisconsin) and a handbell conducting student of Dr. William A. Payn (Bucknell University). He also developed his handbells composing skills with Arnold Sherman and polished his handbells performance technique with Dr. John Behnke (AGEHR). He graduated with an outstanding result. In the summer of 2003, he also learned Creativity in Handbell Performance and Teaching under the supervision of the well known music educator, Dr. Hal. Hopson.

Kevin founded the Asia Institute of Handbell in 2006, aiming at nurturing youth ringers and building up an international exchanging linkage among the South Asian Countries. He has instructed seminars in Taipei, Tainan, Edmonton and Toronto. Major events include The Taiwan Handbell Seminar and the SingBell Fest 2008 had been held in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

From 2005-2009, Kevin has performed solo handbells in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, Korea and the United States. He is going to instruct handbell workshops, master classes as well as concerts in different schools to promote handbell music and to advance the techniques of school choirs. Kevin loves to compose too. Some of his arrangements like “Via Dolorosa”, “El Baile Del Amante”, “Song of the Flowers”, etc have already been published in the US and listed with the AGEHR. Ensemble pieces like “Little River Flows”, “You’re My Wing” and “You turned my Grey to Blue” are specially written and arranged for the concert tour 2005.

On the Other hand, Kevin has been interviewed by news papers in Hong Kong and several TV channels in Taiwan, which includes Christian Channels and entertainment programmes.

Kevin is currently the President of Asia International Handbell Association (Hong Kong) and Asia Institute of Handbells, a professional handbell soloist “The Embellishment” who performs international-wise, a member of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, Malmark Handbells Inc. Hong Kong and Taiwan officer and distributor, the director of the Embellishment Youth Handbell Choir, Tai Po Baptist Church guest conductor and consultant, the overseas consultant of the Ministry of Bellz (Singapore) and the honary consultant of Taiwan Handbells Association.
