Damien
Lim Yong Seng,
Music Director
DipABRSM, ATCL, LGSMD(PPD), LRSM
Baba Damien received his early music training under
the
instruction of his Bandmaster Dad, Mr Nicholas Lim and was
a member of the Singapore Schools Percussion Band
under
Mr. Syed Ibrahim BHM.
He was a member of the Singapore Youth Orchestra from
1994 – 1999 under the tutorage of Mr. Lim Meng Keh. He also
free-lances for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore
Pop Orchestra and Singapore Chinese Orchestra
and is a timpanist/percussionist with musicals like ‘Chang
& Eng’, ’HONK’, ‘They’re
Playing Our Song’, ‘A Twist Of Fate’,
‘Beauty World’, ‘ Magic Of Love’,
‘ The Magic Box’, ‘ The Wizard of
Oz’ and ‘Forbidden City’……just
to name a few. He also conducted the band for musicals such as:
Bibiks Go Broadway, Baba Nyonya Mari-Go-Round,
Siapa Baba, River of Life and in Vizpro Entertainment
– Mediacorp – Toy Factory mega-production of The
Peranakan Ball: Musical, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, featuring
TV stars like Jeanette Aw, Dai Yang Tian, Xiang Yun, Ann Kok and
Asian pop-star, Olivia Ong (singer of The Little Nyonya Theme song).
Damien is the conductor and advisor for 13 Primary and Secondary
Schools Handbells Ensembles, of which 3 schools attained the Singapore
Youth Festival GOLD Awards in 2006 and 2 schools attained the SYF
GOLD with Honors and GOLD Awards in 2008. He is also Festival Director
of the SingBellz Fest’08, Singapore’s
Inaugural Handbells Festival, as well as Production Manager of the
1st Asia Handbell Festival. Damien received his
handbells training from Miss Emily Li (HK) and Mr Kevin M Ko (HK).
He was Principal Timpanist/Percussionist with the Singapore
Armed Forces Central Band from 1996 – 2002, a member
of the World Youth Wind Orchestra in Austria in
2000 and the HeartBeat Percussion Band from 1991
- 2001.
From 2001 - 2003, he was Conductor /Adjudicator at the National
Youth Percussion Festival. He is also Chapter President
of the Percussive Arts Society (Singapore) and
a proud member of the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild
and the American Guild of English Handbells Ringers.
In 2004, he was invited to be Guest Emcee - Choreographer/Music
Composer for the National Day Parade 2004 Act 3:
Percussion Segment. He also performs for the Chingay Parade
bi-annually.
Damien presently leads the Peranakan Baba Band
and founded the professional Four-4 Percussion Team
and Asian Melodies. He actively performs with the
Main Wayang Company, a Peranakan Cultural Company.
In 2007, Damien funded and founded the Ministry of Bellz,
Singapore’s Premiere Handbells Ensemble. He also Guest Conducted
the Hong Kong Youth Handbells Ensemble in its Singapore
Tour 2007. Damien was awarded the “Exhibition Award”
by UK’s Trinity College of Music of London in 2006 and was
nominated for the Singapore Youth Awards 2007, Young Artist Award
2007 and Spirit of Entrepreneur Award 2009.
A well-travelled musician, Damien has performed / conducted in Malaysia,
Egypt, Turkey, Australia, China, Japan, Brunei, Thailand, USA, Austria,
South Korea, France, Ireland, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and New
Zealand. His 2010 overseas engagements include Penang, KL, Melaka
(Malaysia), Xiamen (China), Hong Kong (HK), Osaka (Japan) and Mackay/Brisbane
(Australia). He will also travel in 2011 to Calgary (Canada) and
Sydney (Australia) and 2012 Liverpool (UK).
