Scope of Workshop:
To explore what is beyond the Rudiments of Music Theory.
To encourage a spirit of exploration of “Life after Grade Five”.
This introductory workshop will discuss and give practical help to those who wish to learn Music
Theory at Grade Six and above; perhaps leading to a serious pursuit of its study beyond its academic
aspects but not excluding it.
i. Music Theory – Building Blocks
ii. Ear Training – The Neglected Element
iii. Harmony – “Meat and Potatoes”
iv. Triads and Seventh Chords
v. Procedure for Four-Part Writing
Theory of Music Grade 5 and above
Certificate of attendance will be issued.
About MAJ Wei
MAJ Tonni Wei is no stranger to the music scene in Singapore. Trained in London in Military Music, he won the Besson Medal for being top student in the Royal Military School of Music Bandmaster’s Examination in 1976.
Studied conducting under Maurice Miles, harmony under Gordon Reynolds & orchestration under Douglas A. Pope. His music achievements cover a wide variety, including work as composer, arranger, teacher, performer, sound engineer, producer and director in both the contemporary as well as the classical field.
MAJ(Ret) Wei’s major musical contributions include works and responsibilities at national levels, namely National Day Parades and th 1993 SEA Games Ceremonies. Many compositions by MAJ(Ret) Wei are still being used for National and State events and ceremonies.
In July 1999, the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS) presented the “COMPASS Artistic Excellence Award” to MAJ WEI for his outstanding and commendable achievements and contribution to the development of local music in Singapore. In November 2000, MAJ WEI was once again honour by COMPASS with the “Top Local Serious Music Award” for his composition “On Wings of Joy”, which was performed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for National Day on 9 August 1999.
Besides 28 years of service to the Singapore Armed Forces, and retiring as Senior Director of Music, SAF Bands, MAJ(Ret) Wei is also well-known and respected in Singapore’s music scene at large. Since retiring from the service in August 2000, he joined the London College of Music in 2001 and remains as Music Examiner till the present.
